The leaders held a planning meeting last week and I think we’ve put together a fantastic and adventurous program for this spring. I am really looking forward to it.
You may have noticed on the most recent emails to parents there is a link to this website. One of the things we are going to try to do is post upcoming information and news. Mike Kerr has been working hard to get the website up and running — thanks Mike. One feature that should help is the google calendar on the Events and Calendar page. We will be working to fill-out the rest of the year planning to June. Please check it out and if you have any questions drop one of us a line. Also the usual caveat with the calendar applies – meetings and activities are subject to change based on leader availability and weather etc. Keep a lookout for changes.
As you are already aware, our first meeting is Tuesday, January 15th. You may have also noticed we have switched our meetings to the Multi-Purpose Room in the school, this room will suit us better than the MOD for the meeting activities we have planned this spring.
The first meeting will be busy. We are starting our Kub Kars, Cubs and Scouts (Scout Trucks) will be designing their Kub Kars and tracing them on the blocks of wood, which Jud will take home to cut. We are planning on attending a Kub Kar rally in Squamish on January 26th, with the Squamish and Whistler Cubs, date and details are still to be confirmed.
We will also be planning our Winter Camp to Mt. Hollyburn Scout Cabin for Feb 2 and 3. We’ll be handing out a packing list and other details at the meeting. We are looking for parents to come and help out on the trip. Joel’s dad, – James is planning on going – thanks James. I hope other parents will also consider coming along, it’s going to be a memorable trip. Please let us know as soon as possible as there are some administrative forms to complete.
We have also received two much appreciated offers of help from parents.
Helen West Sadler has offered to help with coordinating transportation. As you know, the leaders are not responsible for getting cubs to meetings, day -trips and camps. The Kub Kar rally in Squamish and the Winter camp are two upcoming activities where rides will be needed.
Liesl de Beer has offered to help with administration.
Thanks Helen and Liesl for giving your time to Bowen Cubs and Scouts. I would like to encourage other parents to step forward and help. Our goal is to have a parent committee, called a Group Committee in Scouts, like other Cub and Scout groups have so us leaders can focus on delivering a great program. The role of the Group Committee is support the Cub and Scout leaders and liaise with leaders on the running of the Cub and Scout programs. It won’t be a lot of work – a few meetings a year. For information on the role and responsibilities of a Group Committee click on this
link. The time and tasks outlined on the page are more than what is required to help us out but will give you an idea.
